The International Think Tank Summit «Primakov Readings» 2017 dedicated to the memory of the outstanding scientist and statesman Academician Yevgeny Primakov took place at the Moscow’s World Trade Center on June 29- 30. The theme of the forum was "The World in 2035".
Assistant to the President of the Russian Federation Yuri Ushakov opened the Summit and read out the greetings from Vladimir Putin. In his speech, Yuri Ushakov said that Yevgeny Primakov's statement: “to make friends with all countries is not necessary but it is possible to work and cooperate with them” with regard to actual Russia- United States relationships was true and relevant today.
President of the Primakov Institute of World Economy and International Relations Alexander Dynkin said that we live in the most difficult era of contradictions and we can no longer regard European values as one and absolutely correct for the whole world. We need to look wider he noted and recalled the idea of Yevgeny Primakov on strategic values.
Sergey Katyrin, the President of the CCI of Russia emphasized that in recent years experts were talking about a “turn to the East” in Russia's foreign policy, mainly because of Western sanctions. But this was not the case. This course was set much earlier by Yevgeny Primakov. The choice of this direction was based on understanding of the multi-polarity of the world, the increasing role of the countries of the Asia-Pacific region in the economic and political agenda. At the same time one cannot speak of a complete "turn" of Russia towards the countries of the Asia-Pacific region. Russia's partnership with European countries and the United States of America had a long history which cannot be destroyed by the efforts of individual political leaders.
During the second day Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and the former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger took part in the forum.
According to Sergey Lavrov, the process of forming a polycentric world order about which Yevgeny Primakov wrote a lot, became today’s reality. His talent as a scientist made it possible to clearly understand the meaning of the current tectonic shifts in the international arena, the minister said.
The US and Russia have different perceptions of national security, but it is clear to everyone that the consequences of our differences could be catastrophic, Henry Kissinger noted. However, he said, today there is a real opportunity to achieve better relations between our countries.
